Glória Alhinho (Georgetown University, Washington-DC, USA)
Cristiane Checchia (Universidad Federal de Integración Latinoamericana, Brazil)
Dirceu Franco Ferreira (Universidade de São Paulo/CoPALC, Brazil)
Luis González Alvo (Universidad Nacional de Tucumán/ CoPALC, Argentina)
Mario Rodriguez Torres (Universidad Federal de Integración Latinoamericana, Brazil)
Samuel Tracol (Sorbonne-Université/CoPALC, France)
The purpose of this call for papers is to gather reflections on the relationship between art and prison. This intersection can be investigated through literacy expression, produced in and about prison, and by integrating other artistic expression, such as music, painting, photography or fashion. It addresses how art allows us to recreate or reinvent social relationships in prison space and beyond.
This call is the result of seminars organised by the Research Group on Penitentiary Colonisation in Latin America and the Caribbean (CoPALC) in partnership with the Revista de Historia de las Prisiones, the extension project Right to Poetry (UNILA), the University of Guyana and the University of São Paulo. Meetings were held during the past year, thanks to the Franco-Brazilian chairs programme promoted by the Consulate General of France in São Paulo. Through inter- and transdisciplinary work, it has become clear that art participates in the production of knowledge about prison, making it more permeable to change.
The file will welcome both academic and non-academic productions, such as artistic experiments carried out within the prison community, whether by artists, former prisoners of the system, officers or activists.
The dossier will welcome contributions in the following four languages: Spanish, Portuguese, French and English.
The articles can focus on the following topics:
1/ Art and prison: which are the artistic spaces in prison?
What space exists in prison for literature, photography, painting, cinema, etc.? How are artistic projects born and developed in prison?
2/ Art and identity: intimacy, interstices and self-expression.
How can art contribute to protecting identitary traits in prison? Can it help developping new identitary spaces within this institution?
3/ The artist and the researcher: knowing the prison through sensitive experience.
How does artistic production lead to research, and how does it express itself artistically?
4/ Art and politics: imagining a world without prisons.
How can art lead to a political and ethical reflection on prison?
5/ A history of art in prison?
What history can be written about the use of art in institutions of liberty deprivation? Which functions have been attributed to art in these institutions? How permeable is prison to artistic movements?
